Vehicle description

The Fords of 1940 were all about style. Taking cues from the stunning pre-war Lincoln Zephyr, Ford's chief designer, Eugene T. "Bob" Gregorie shaped the new Ford range with a distinct front-end treatment and streamlined form. The prominent prow and horizontal grille bars defined the new Ford's face, which now had integrated headlamps set low and wide in the front fenders. The venerable flathead V8 remained under the hood, now uprated to 90 horsepower, though a smaller 60-hp version was available as an option. Particularly in convertible coupe form as this car is, the 1940 Ford is a simple yet striking design with timeless, enduring charm. Recently out of a quarter-century of continuous ownership, this 1940 Ford Convertible is a delightful example. Treated to a comprehensive restoration in the late 80s, this Deluxe Convertible has been lovingly maintained and kept fresh through the years and is offered with a light, appealing patina. As a testament to the original restoration, it received a Best in Class at the 1987 AACA meet at Hershey, Pennsylvania, in what was indeed a hotly contested class. Finished in Mandarin Maroon over a tan interior and top, it is in excellent condition today, having lived a charmed existence, being used sparingly in recent years. The paintwork is in fine order, and the color complements the curves of the body. It wears the correct Deluxe trim, including the chrome headlight bezels, additional grille segments, and "Ford Deluxe" hub caps. The brightwork is in excellent order for its age and consistent with this being such a well-maintained older restoration. Correct patterns and materials are used throughout the interior, and the soft trim is in good condition overall. Some moderate creasing is noted on the driver's seat, yet it is in remarkably good order considering the age. Likewise, the canvas convertible top and the matching boot are in excellent condition. The two-tone dash is correct for this Deluxe model, along with the ivory steering wheel and matching window winders and escutcheons. Features include wood-grain trim, column shift manual gearbox, clock, and factory radio. The 90-horsepower flathead V8 is tidy and well-detailed in the correct shade of dark green with black accessories. Details like authentic reproduction radiator hoses bear the Ford logo and part number stamp and are affixed with period-correct clamps. Feeding the V8 is a single downdraft carburetor topped with an oil bath air cleaner. The engine runs well, with the signature burble and easy-going character make flathead Fords of this era so endearing. This stylish Ford convertible has clearly been lovingly maintained in the years since its quality restoration, and it remains a pleasure to use. Offering a delightful driving experience and mechanical simplicity in a timelessly styled package, the 1940 Ford is an excellent choice for newcomers to car collecting and experienced owners alike. This lovely example will undoubtedly bring its next keeper many miles of happy motoring.
