The 356 B 1600 Normal Cabriolet carried a base price of $3,962 FOB New York, according to a 1960 price list from Hoffman Motors, the New York importer. That was about a hundred dollars more than a new Corvette. The 1600 Super versions and Carrera versions were even more costly. Porsche cabriolets were extremely well built by Reutter, adjacent to the Porsche Works in Zuffenhausen, and were very comfortable all-weather touring automobiles. Adjustable seatbacks and good soundproofing provided occupants with a smooth and reasonably quiet ride at high speeds. Offered here is a magnificent matching-numbers example of the desirable and luxurious 1961 Porsche 356B 1600 Super T5 Cabriolet by Reutter, a truly iconic and timeless sportscar. According to a copy of the original factory Kardex (production record), this very car – chassis no. 154890 – was completed at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen-based factory on March 10th, 1961. The new 356 Cabriolet was a desirable Super model, giving the 1.6-Liter flat-four engine an extra boost of 25% more horsepower over the normal, base version. The new Porsche was painted stunning Signal Red – as it appears today. Factory options fitted to 154890 included ventilated chrome wheels shod on Dunlop tires, and Porsche’s Anti-theft locking device of the time, which essentially was a locking mechanism of the gear lever. The new Porsche 356B 1600 Super T5 Cabriolet was dispatched from Zuffenhausen on March 20th, 1961 and was delivered new as a European Tourist Delivery to Mr. Carl W. Rankin of Timonium, Maryland. It was meticulously maintained for many years until being subject to a spectacular no-expense-spared Concours d’Elegance winning restoration and is now ready for its next caretaker. We are proud to offer what we believe to be one of the very best restored Porsche 356B Cabriolets on the market today. Accompanying this investment-grade 1961 Porsche 356B 1600 Super T5 Cabriolet are its original driving manual, production records, Kardex, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.
